Gulmarg got its first snow fall for November 2009

Gulmarg got its first snow fall in Tuesday, reported by PTI. The Met release expecting more snow for next 3 to 4 days, as of now more than 6 inches show are mapped.
Noted that Jammu and Kashmir received snowfall through the day Thursday, in the first major snowfall in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley which is already reeling under near cold wave conditions. The 14-km road from Tangmarg town to Gulmarg now lies blocked.

“Due to a western disturbances, the valley has been experiencing precipitation for the last 12 hours and rain and snowfall in the higher reaches is likely to continue for another two days,” T.K. Jotshi, assistant director of the local weather office, told IANS here.

The minimum temperature was five degrees Celsius Thursday which according to Jotshi was four degrees above normal.

Asked why the valley was reeling under near cold wave conditions despite the temperature being above normal, the weatherman said: “It is because of the chill factor. Cold winds blow into the valley from the snow-clad mountains which add to the chill factor during the day.”

Local tourist are pouring in the region and joy the first snowfall of season.

Srinagar, Oct 22 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said infrastructure should be developed at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg but the work should be done in complete consonance with ecological and environmental requirements. "Infrastructure development should be carried on in complete consonance with ecological and environmental requirements without tampering with the natural beauty of the hill resort," Omar said addressing the 5th meeting of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) at Gulmarg, 60 kms from here, yesterday.

Reiterating the government''s determination to restore state''s pristine glory of being the choicest tourist resort for the national and international tourists of wide-ranging interests, Omar asked Tourism Development Authorities to work for integrated and comprehensive tourism development. He said in order to make the Gulmarg world class ski resort, the chairlift project should be taken beyond Koungdori.

"This would give people beautiful and standard skiing track and slopes and help organise national and international skiing events," Omar, who is also the chairman of GDA, said. PTI AMS.
